Thirty-Five

Mason

“Open it, Lacey,” I grumble, leaning against the wall next to the basement door.

“I’m getting to it.”

She’s not. She’s staring at the keypad, probably contemplating whether she’s capable of showing me her inner sanctum. The parts of her house I’ve seen so far aren’t personal, but this feels like it is.

“I promise I won’t steal anything.”

She scoffs, punching in the numbers, and the door unlocks, revealing a wooden staircase. Lights flash on as she tromps down and I follow. The basement isn’t exactly finished with its concrete walls and curtains sectioning off areas of the room. She cringes when I glance at a makeshift bed shoved in the corner. Pushing through the fabric is like entering a whole new world.

The computer screens lining an entire wall blink on. One screen flashes a welcome message with a list below it. Leaning in, I try to read it, but she steps in front of me, glaring.

“This isn’t a museum and I’m not a tour guide, so don’t expect me to explain what I’m doing. You’ll stand in the corner and keep your mouth shut.”

She pokes me in the chest, and I capture her wrist, bringing her hand to my lips and kissing her palm. She rolls her eyes, tugging from my grasp, and I grin. This is much better than whatever the hell I was doing before. The moment I decided she was mine, something settled inside me. The guilt hasn’t diminished, but there’s a certain peace from just knowing she’ll be where I can see her.

An alarm sounds and she drops into the chair, spinning around and staring at the screen. I shuffle closer, but I can’t make any sense of what she’s looking at until she pulls up a camera at the end of her street. It vibrates, flashing white every few seconds, and a curse falls from her lips. Her fingers fly across the keyboard and another screen pops up with another angle. Three more boxes flash into existence and then they all go dark as a deep rumble echoes through the space. The ceiling shudders and then another boom hits us.

“Lacey, what the fuck is going on out there?”

I'm sure she's expecting me to keep my mouth shut, but we clearly have bigger problems thundering toward us, quite literally. Sitting idly by while she searches through images isn’t going to help my anxiety.

An eruption flares from the corner of one of the screens and then goes white. Seconds later, the sound rolls over us, the explosion causing the house to sway under the heatwave blasting through the neighborhood. I throw myself toward Lacey as the metal beams above us groan. Her cry rings through the space as I tackle her out of the chair, tucking us under the desk.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" she shrieks.

Her voice is muffled against my chest, and I press into her, waiting for the ceiling to collapse on top of us. The room falls silent, nothing but our harsh breaths filling the space.
